Prof. Alex (Siu-Lun) Fok is a Mechanical Engineer by trade. He has expertise in solid mechanics and structural stress analysis using the finite element method. He has been Director of the Minnesota Dental Research Center for Biomaterials and Biomechanics (MDRCBB) since November 2007. With over 25 years of uninterrupted industrial funding, the MDRCBB is an international leader in the development and application of novel characterization techniques for dental biomaterials.
His main research activities include shape optimization of dental restorations, shrinkage strain/stress measurement and analysis, and nondestructive examination of interfacial integrity. A principal aim of his research is to instill more rigorous engineering principles into the design and assessment of dental restorations and treatments.
